The Hamilton Fringe Festival is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year and it looks as though the time is right for LGBTQ theatre artists to express themselves with queer themed shows. Hamilton, less than an hour west of downtown Toronto, has a thriving cultural community that has grown exponentially in recent years.
The following are five LGBTQ themed shows that will be making their mark at Hamilton Fringe this month...
The Mommiad features award-winning queer playwright Sky Gilbert reading from his poetic and heartfelt book of poems through his own voice and that of his alter ego, Jane.
The Wrong Sex, written by playwright Sonja Mills, is a commentary on the binary model and an exercise in gender gymnastics. Prepare to have your assumptions toyed with.
The Judy Monologues, conceived and directed by Darren Stewart-Jones, is a multimedia docudrama that features Elley-Ray Hennessy in the role of fading superstar and gay icon, Judy Garland.
Borderland is a solo show that explores a gay Iranian man's story. The play, written and performed by Izad Etemadi, has been touring Fringe Festivals across Canada this summer.
Tom, Dick & Harry is a modern day comedy about Sally, a recent divorcee with three men in her life. - Tom is a graduate student 13 years her junior with whom she’s getting her dating mojo back. Dick is her ex-husband. And Harry is Dick’s lover.
