Ryan G. Hinds certainly knows how to make an entrance. After his talented musical trio played a brief overture for Starry Notions, Hinds appeared at the top of the stairs of the Annex theatre stage looking every inch the star. From his red sequin painted lips to his purple-laced Converse high top running shoes, Hinds looked like a proud peacock ready to strut his stuff. And he did.
Starry Notions is a cabaret of pop songs and musical theatre tunes woven together with funny and touching stories of Hinds’ youth, travels and career. Hinds’ Cabaret Artist In Residence stint at Buddies In Bad Times Theatre has definitely paid off. He was in good voice and sang his eclectic song selections well. The opening night crowd especially loved his renditions of Poor Unfortunate Souls (from The Little Mermaid) and Aerosmith’s Dream On, which closed the show.

Hinds looked at home on the cabaret stage despite
a few hiccups with forgotten lyrics at the beginning of the show, most likely due to
opening night jitters. But, as with any polished performer, even little
glitches can become entertaining when handled with professionalism and humour.
Ryan G. Hinds is a Diva. And I mean that as a compliment.
